An important note to keep in mind:
Just like some of us are spontaneous singers & movers, others are careful and astute observers.
- We do not expect children to do what the teacher is doing --ever!
- We expect children to be children
(turn away, smile, cry, sing, get hungry, stare, point, jump, giggle, maybe even sleep) all the while, though, they will be soaking up all of the musical input in class and cueing in to your every move!
WHAT DO I TAKE?
We recommend for you and your family to bring comfy socks!
WHAT TO EXPECT?
We will be on the floor for part of the class and we'll get up on our feet from time to time. We will sing, tap, bounce, stomp, plus explore instruments.
You are the best role model, especially when it comes to music! Many adults feel deprived, confused, or inadequate about their ability in music. By participating with your child, you can begin to rediscover within yourself the natural human musicality that is everyone's birthright. Whatever the level of your musical technical skill, YOU ARE your child's best music teacher right now so, let me guide you!
1. Let yourself be FREE & vulnerable to connect with your child
2. Allow these 45 minutes to be full bonding time. Participate by singing & playing!
3. Avoid texts/calls but feel free to take quick candid pictures during class! There will be wonderful moments you'll want to remember!
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT OF MY BABY?
Babies may vocalize, listen, and observe. Your baby will be learning about beat, rhythm, and movement simply because you are moving while holding them. It's OK to leave your infant on the floor while you sing, dance, or play with instruments as you interact with them.
Some visible ways babies respond to music:
- feet are outstretched or kicking
- eyes "brighten" or change focus
- tongue moves in repetitive motion
- eyes move toward to sound source
- hands clench or wave wildly in the air
- middle of torso moves rhythmically
- baby makes cooing sounds
- baby smiles or giggles
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT OF MY TODDLER/PRESCHOOLER?
- Most children choose (wisely!) to observe more often than to participate actively in class. They're taking in info that they'll act on later at home.
- Most children become accustomed to the class routine and their classmates around the 5th or 6th week. At this point, their participation is likely to increase.
- Children are assimilating important music information whether or not they're outwardly participating.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
HOW DO I JUGGLE MY TWO CHILDREN IN CLASS?
It may feel tricky but remember your baby is in "super-soaker" mode and absorbing all the input coming their way. Most of the time, babies are enthralled with watching their parents/caregivers and older siblings interact musically. It's OK to leave your infant on the floor while you sing, dance, or play with instruments with your older child, trusting that your baby is learning volumes by watching YOU play. It is also OK to reach out and ask for help at any point!
WHAT IF MY BABY IS CRYING WHILE WE ARE SINGING?
Highly recommend to stand and bounce rhythmically while others in the group continue singing/instrument playing. In other words, keep making music and calming them with your voice. If you need to step out after a song or two, please feel free to come in & out as needed.
WHAT IF MY TODDLER IS WALKING/TWIRLING/ROLLING AROUND WHILE WE ARE SINGING?
Let them wonder and be curious about this new musical space! Stay put and keep participating with everyone else while making eye contact with your own child. Please DO interfere if you see them being unsafe with the instruments, their bodies or others'.
WHAT ARE THEY LEARNING MUSICALLY AT THIS EARLY STAGE?
1. Audiation: The experience of hearing music in our minds even when there is no external music present.
2. To identify rhythmic and melodic patterns
3. They are being exposed to various sonorities and types of music
4. Opportunity for social interactions while making live music memories
5. We are adding ways of expressing themselves emotionally & physically
...... let's get coffee and chat in person about this, since I am obviously very passionate about this and can keep going forever!
